As a proud New Zealand citizen by birth, and a proud Australian citizen by choice, today is significant. Today, we remember the ANZAC's. At the rising and the setting of the sun, we pause to remember, to commemorate and to reflect on the sacrifices made by our people in the past and the present in the trenches of war.
There is a significant reason why I have dedicated several years of my life to researching, understanding and exploring war in the context of higher education. There is much history of military men in my family alone, so many stories to share, horrors to relive and life changing experiences to reflect upon. My uncle served in Vietnam, my cousin is currently deployed for service in the Middle East and my dear father has been an active member of the New Zealand Air Force for 40 years.
Today we remember those who died and served in war, we stand in appreciation for the battles they fought for one another their nations and their families.
To the soldiers and civilians who died and fought restlessly in war, may your race, gender, skin colour and nationality never hinder us to commemorate your sacrifices and the brutality of war.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
Lest we forget.
